Trump: US gains access to 65bn barrels from Venezuela, enough for 500 years
President Donald Trump said that, as a result of a large‑scale energy agreement with Venezuela, the United States has gained access to 65 billion barrels of oil—enough to supply the American economy for 500 years. Speaking in Dallas at the Republican National Convention ahead of November’s midterm elections, the president called the deal the largest oil transaction in global history and possibly the biggest economic agreement in US history. Trump said Washington had built excellent relations with Caracas, enabling a dramatic expansion of the United States’ resource base.
The president added that the United States remains the world’s largest oil producer even without the new assets and that integrating Venezuelan fields would cement US dominance in the global energy market. He said the top priority for the acquired crude is to urgently refill the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, which has been materially depleted in recent years.
Trump’s remarks followed a series of symbolic and diplomatic moves by the White House. Shortly before the convention, he posted an image on social media of Venezuela shaded in US flag colors, figuratively calling the Latin American republic a potential “51st state.”
